Wallhanging Project

"The wall hanging project is the result of a personal challenge between Racaire and Anya to recreate a medieval wall hanging of their choice, and should be done at least 50 percent in a medieval stitch not normally used by them. This project will last a year and a day, ending on August 1st, 2007."
After I finished the first 4 roundels, I decided to make another 4 roundels and finally I decided to make 2 additional ones, because I thought that after all the time I already spent, it wouldn't really make a difference concerning the additional time - in the end it took me 3 years to complete my very own "Weiberlisten" wallhanging.
Details:
- For more information please follow this link: Wallhanging Project
- Embroidery: Klosterstich, Stem Stitch
- Wool: http://www.renaissancedyeing.com/
- Working time: 2006 - 2009
- Size of the embroidery: ca. 53,0 x 121,0 cm
- Inspiration: Maltererteppich / Weiberlistenteppich - 67,5 x 491,0 cm - Germany, Freiburg, 1320/1330
- Main difference to the inspiration / original design: 2 "Register" instead of just 1 "Register" (2 levels instead of just 1) - therefore I needed a slightly altered (new) design between the "Register" to connect them and I combined the design of the outer and inner border to a new design for the border between the roundels...
Inspiration:

The Stories behind the pictures:
- Samson and Dalila
- Aristoteles and Phyllis
- Vergil and the daughter of the Emperor Augustus
- Knight Iwein defeats King Askalon / Knight Iwein, handmaid Lunete (left) and Queen Laudine (right)
- Virgin with unicorn - "Gottesminne" - for the spiritual love (to god)
- Instead of the coat of arms used in the original wallhanging I decided to use a pictures of the "Codex Manesse" (also 14th century) for the secular love. I slightly altered the picture to go with the design of the other roundels.
